The declaration was issued to close the G7 Summit at Schloss Elmau from 7-8 June 2015.
Mary Robinson stated:
“I welcome the statement by the G7 because it signals that climate change is an urgent problem that requires a global response by world leaders.
The kind of leadership that is required from countries, to put the world on a safe path, is different depending on their responsibility and capacity. Therefore it is important that the G7 acknowledged that a decarbonisation of the global economy is possible when all countries are supported and enabled to participate in the transition.
But 75 years is too long to wait and would result in significant climate impacts for people already living in vulnerable situations. The urgent transfer of technologies and financial support to developing countries, many of whom are already adapting to climate change and are willing to develop without fossil fuels, is critical for the future of people on this planet.”
