The 19th GIMAC Pre-Summit Consultation on Gender Mainstreaming in the African Union has published the recommendations agreed at the meeting which took place from 25-26 January 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The 19th GIMAC Pre-Summit Consultation on Gender Mainstreaming in the African Union has published the recommendations agreed at the meeting which took place from 25-26 January 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The meeting was attended by representatives of African civil society organisations and African women leaders. the Foundation was represented at the meeting by President Mary Robinson and Dr Tara Shine, head of Research and Development.
The meeting urged the 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government and other stakeholders to consider and adopt their recommendations.
The recommendations for the member states of the African Union include three on gender and climate change:
- Create opportunities for women to own land and provide training for women in new farming techniques to increase crop productivity and to adapt to farming challenges arising from climate change
- Ensure the participation of women in all aspects of climate change negotiations, policy and action at all levels in order to enable inclusive sustainable development and to harness Africa’s opportunity to lead the green economy
- Address climate change risks and opportunities for green growth through national strategies and plans with a focus on the positive contribution women can make to adaptation and mitigation.
