The Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice begins 2014 with the presence of its president, Mary Robinson, at a number of high-profile public events.
On 20th January Mrs Robinson and the Masdar Institute will co-host a side-event at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week: ‘Linking Energy and Humanity: The role of GCC countries in combating climate change’
This event provides an opportunity to engage participants at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in a discussion on the role of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in combating climate change by driving the transition to low carbon development. It will engage the private sector, political leaders, women leaders, policy makers and youth in the Climate Justice Dialogue in order to mobilise demand for an equitable people-centred climate agreement in 2015.
It will also facilitate a discussion on fairness, both in terms of exposure to climate impacts and leadership on climate action.
Joining Mrs Robinson in this panel discussion will be Dr. Bahjat Al Yousef, Dean of Students, Masdar Institute; Mr. Solaiman Al Rifai, Director of Project Finance, Dubai Supreme Council of Energy; and Ms. Ida Tillisch, Director General, Emirates Wildlife Society – World Wild Fund for Nature.
This event is undertaken as part of the Climate Justice Dialogue, an initiative of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice and the World Resources Institute.
On 24th January Mrs Robinson will be joined by Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kathy Calvin, President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation, for a discussion on the role of women leaders in climate change to be held during the 2014 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
‘Women Leaders for Climate Justice: Mobilizing Action on Climate Change by Women Leaders in Advance of September 2014’ will aim to engage women leaders on the human rights dimensions of climate change negotiations ahead of the Leaders’ Summit, to be hosted by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in nine months’ time.
