CIEL and The Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice have produced an interactive online resource cataloguing references to human rights in reports to the UNFCCC and the HRC.
To realise climate justice, countries must ensure that climate action is good for people as well as the planet. By integrating human rights considerations into policies and programmes to combat climate change, decision makers can develop effective responses that tackle climate change and ensure that the well being of populations living in vulnerable situations.
In order to better understand how countries were considering their human rights obligations in their climate strategies, the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice commissioned an extensive survey to assess the extent to which countries were reporting on the links between human rights and climate change. The research considered National Communications and NAPAs submitted to the UNFCCC and national reports to the Universal Periodic Review under the Human Rights Council. Findings from this research were first published in October 2014, with an updated report following in May 2016.
Now, an updated data set is available to explore using the new online resource. Using the interactive map and related filters, users can identify what countries have reported on the linkages between human rights and climate change under these processes. By way of drop down filters, the resource also allows users to examine how countries have referenced specific rights or view all references from a given country or report.
It is expected that this tool will be an asset to policy makers, technical experts, academics, journalists and anyone with an interest in understanding how rights informed climate action is being undertaken around the world.
