On 20 June 2012, President of the Foundation, Mary Robinson, joined panellists at an event on Food and Nutrition Security, Health and Gender Equality: Partnerships for climate-resilient sustainable development.

Addressing the question of what would constitute an acceptable outcome from Rio+20 and how this would inform an equitable post-2015 MDG framework, Mary Robinson said that it was absolutely unacceptable to step back from commitments taken to date. She highlighted the need for the outcome from Rio+20 to move forward and bring the world closer to sustainable development.

Etharin Cousin, Executive Director of World Food Programme, responded to a question on the types of partnerships required to reduce under-nutrition and hunger in poor countries. She called for “culturally sensitive programmes created by women for their communities”.

The event, moderated by David Nabarro, UN SG’s Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition, provided a forum to examine the linkages between food and nutrition security, health, gender equality, environmental degradation and climate justice.

A policy brief has been developed by the co-organisers of the event: PHI, WFP, UNDP, FAO, WHO, IFAD and the Foundation.
